Stanley Peter 'Stitch' Bernard

Stanley Peter 'Stitch' Bernard was born on January 18, 1910, in Yonkers, New York, to Catherine N Bunk (Bernard), age 21, and Michael Bernard, age 26. In Rye his family lived at 2 School Street and he was educated in Port Chester schools.

A resident of Rye for 35 years, he began working at the club in 1925 as a golf caddy. After turning pro, he spent his winters at the Boca Raton Hotel in Florida as a resident pro.

He married Irene Thomas (Bernard) on December 12, 1938, in Rye, New York.

Stanley enlisted February 19, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army. During World War II. He served in Germany and Japan with the 97 Infantry Division.

Corp. Stanley P. Bernard of Rye has been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, it has been revealed by the Army. He took the battle of the Ruhr Pocket, including the capture of Siegburg and Dusseldorf, and was in the Czechoslovakian campaign. He is attached to Co. D 303 Regt. 97th Infantry Division. His wife. After the war he was the golf pro at the Westchester Country Club in Harrison, NY. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Boca Raton.

A parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, he was also a member of the Port Chester Old Timers Club and the Professional Golfers Assn.
